First Massage Jitters Are Real — Here's What We Wish You Knew Before You Booked

I own a spa. I hear the same sentence at least once a week, usually said quietly, usually with a nervous laugh: "I've actually never gotten a massage before..."

And every time, my heart does a little jump — because that person almost talked themselves out of it. They nearly let a handful of unanswered questions stand between them and the best hour of their month. So let me answer those questions right now, from the other side of the table, as someone who has watched thousands of first-timers walk in stiff and walk out floaty.

"How Much Do I Have to Undress?"

This is the number one worry, so let's kill it first: you undress only to your comfort level, and you'll be under a sheet or blanket the entire time. Only the area being worked on is uncovered — typically a limb or a section of your back. Many first-timers leave their underwear on; plenty of people don't. Both are completely normal. Your therapist will step out of the room while you get on the table, and there's a whole protocol designed around your modesty. We promise: nobody is evaluating you. We're evaluating muscle tension, and that's it.

"Am I Supposed to Talk?"

Another big one. The honest answer: it's your hour, so it's your call. Some clients process their whole week out loud; others drift into a half-sleep by minute ten. Therapists are trained to read the room. The only talking that's required is practical — telling us the pressure is too much, that the table is too warm, or that your left shoulder is the problem child. Which brings me to...

"What Am I Actually Supposed to Ask For?"

You don't need to know massage terminology. You don't need to know the difference between Swedish and deep tissue (though if you're curious, we wrote a whole quiz about it). All you need is a sentence like: *"My shoulders and lower back carry all my stress, and I like firm pressure."

That's a complete briefing. A good therapist takes it from there. And here's a pro tip: saying "that's a bit too hard" or "you can go deeper" mid-session is not rude — it's the single most helpful thing you can do. We can't read minds, but we can read feedback.

The Tipping Question, Answered Plainly

Ah, America. In the US, tipping massage therapists is customary and genuinely appreciated — therapists typically receive a portion of the session price, and gratuities make up real income. A common range is 15–20% of the session cost, in cash or added to your card. If your experience was exceptional, more is welcome; if budget is tight this month, even a heartfelt thank-you matters. Nobody is tallying your tip at the door. But if you've been lying awake wondering: yes, 20% is the safe, generous, standard move.

"What If I Fall Asleep? Or Snore? Or... Pass Gas?"

All three have happened in my spa this month. All three were fine. Falling asleep is, frankly, a compliment — it means your nervous system downshifted, which is the whole point. Snoring is adorable. And digestion is a bodily function that occasionally announces itself during relaxation; therapists have heard everything and care about exactly none of it. You cannot embarrass us. Truly.

The One Thing I Wish Every First-Timer Knew

If you take a single sentence from this article, let it be this: there is no performance. You don't have to be relaxed the right way, breathe the right way, or enjoy the right parts. You just have to show up and lie down. The massage does the rest.

The word namaste gets tossed around a lot in our industry, but at its heart it means something simple: the good in me sees the good in you. When you finally book that first appointment — nervous, full of questions, maybe with a note on your phone listing your problem areas — that's exactly the person we're glad to see walk through the door.

The table is warm. The room is quiet. All you have to do is arrive.
